VW Crafter Mobile Tyre Van Conversion – Power, Lighting, Cameras & Commercial Vehicle Setup

Vehicle Installers recently completed a full commercial vehicle installation project on a brand new Volkswagen Crafter for Mobile Tyre Vans UK, working in partnership with Concept Garage Equipment.

This top-spec mobile tyre fitting van was built to operate as a professional mobile workshop, with power, lighting, air supply, camera systems, security features and specialist vehicle installation work brought together into one practical working setup.

The project took around eight days to complete, with a large amount of wiring, cable routing, testing and setup required to ensure everything worked correctly and was suitable for daily commercial use.

A Professional Mobile Tyre Van Build

This VW Crafter was supplied by Mobile Tyre Vans UK as one of their top-of-the-range mobile tyre van models. The aim was to create a fully equipped work vehicle capable of supporting mobile tyre fitting, wheel balancing, air supply, lighting and onboard power.

Vehicle Installers handled the vehicle installation side of the build, including power systems, lighting, camera systems, 240V socket installation, air line routing, control systems and electrical setup.

Once complete, the vehicle became a practical mobile workshop designed for tyre fitting work on the road.

Lighting and Warning Features

Lighting was a major part of this conversion.

The van was supplied with a stylish top-mounted beacon system, which is also connected into the vehicle CAN bus system. This allows the beacon to work alongside vehicle functions such as braking, side lights and indicators.

We also fitted full surround working lights, including additional flood lighting above the sliding door and rear quarter roof panels. This gives the operator improved visibility when working around the vehicle, especially in poor light or roadside conditions.

The vehicle also features front, rear, grille and side strobes, helping improve visibility when the van is being used in appropriate working environments.

Additional lighting functions were configured for demonstration and show use, with further testing required before any road-use application.

Camera and Security System

This conversion included a front, rear and side camera system designed to improve visibility and help protect the vehicle.

The camera setup provides side-view coverage when indicating, helping show blind spot areas on screen. It also includes a reversing camera function and records as part of a 24/7 security system.

For commercial vehicles, especially mobile tyre vans, this type of setup is extremely useful. It can help with manoeuvring, parking, reversing, side visibility and vehicle security when the van is parked.

Although this particular van did not have every possible security upgrade fitted, Vehicle Installers can also supply and install additional commercial vehicle security options such as:

  • Deadlocks
  • Immobilisers
  • Alarm systems
  • Tracking systems
  • Security cameras
  • Additional vehicle protection upgrades

Power System and 240V Sockets

A reliable power setup is essential for a mobile tyre fitting van.

For this conversion, we installed a 240V socket system to power key workshop equipment, including the tyre machine, wheel balancer and electric air compressor.

The system included three metal 240V plug sockets, each protected through a separate fuse board setup. This allows the different pieces of equipment to be isolated and protected correctly, helping support the inverter and reduce the risk of electrical issues during daily use.

The system was designed to keep the working area practical, with sockets positioned where they are needed and wiring routed carefully behind the boarding where possible.

Leisure Battery, Split Charging and Inverter Setup

To power the onboard equipment, we fitted a high-capacity leisure battery system connected through a split charging relay from the vehicle battery.

The setup includes circuit protection to help protect both the vehicle and auxiliary battery system. The leisure battery then powers the inverter, which supplies the 240V sockets used for workshop equipment.

We have kept the exact technical specification out of this article, but the system was installed with suitable protection, isolation and circuit separation to support a reliable commercial vehicle power setup.

This type of installation is ideal for mobile tyre vans, service vans, welfare vehicles and other commercial vehicles that need onboard power away from a fixed workshop.

12V Control System and Switch Panel

The 12V side of the conversion was also built around control and usability.

We connected the auxiliary battery system to a fuse board, which then feeds a heavy-duty smart switch panel. This allows the operator to control the newly added features from one convenient panel.

The switch panel controls the additional lighting and vehicle features, keeping the setup easier to use and giving the van a more professional finish.

A clean control system is important in a commercial vehicle because the operator needs quick access to lights, cameras, power and equipment without having to deal with loose switches or messy wiring.

Air Line System and Compressor Setup

A full air line system was fitted and secured behind the boarding to keep the working area tidy and practical.

The van also includes a quieter electric air compressor setup, helping support mobile tyre fitting work without taking up unnecessary space inside the vehicle.

Air line routing is an important part of this type of conversion. The system needs to be accessible, reliable and secure, while still keeping the van clear enough for daily use.

Tyre Machine and Wheel Balancer Installation

Once the power, air and lighting systems were installed and tested, the tyre machine and wheel balancer supplied through Concept Garage Equipment were fitted into the van.

Vehicle Installers do not sell tyre machines or wheel balancers, but we can support the installation and vehicle-side setup required to make these systems work correctly inside a mobile tyre fitting van.

The final layout gives the operator a usable mobile workshop with tyre fitting equipment, wheel balancing equipment, air supply, onboard power, lighting and camera support all brought together into one conversion.
